British Values

The government set out their definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These were reinforced in September 2014 due to recent events. These new regulations will sit alongside the requirements of the Equalities Act, which also applies to all types of schools.

Schools will be expected to focus on, and be able to show, how our work with pupils is effective in embedding fundamental British values.

Promoting British values at Marfleet Primary Academy. We agree with the Department for Education’s five-part definition of British values:

Democracy

Pupil voice is significant in regards to life at Marfleet Academy. Our elected school values ambassadors help Marfleet to be a better place to learn. Children at Marfleet have a great deal of input into what they learn and how they learn.

The Rule Of Law

Children at Marfleet will encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. We want our pupils to understand that whether these laws govern the class, the school, the neighbourhood or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to.

This understanding of the importance of rules will be consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum. The involvement of our children in our class charters helps them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken.

Through Circles, we allow opportunity to debate and discuss the reasons for laws so that children can recognise the importance of these for their own protection.

Throughout the year we welcome visits from members of the wider community including police, PCSOs, the fire brigade and many more. We believe that clear explanations and real life stories emphasise the importance of the rule of law for our pupils.

Individual liberty

At Marfleet Primary Academy, we believe that providing a ‘safe harbor’ allows our children the confidence to thrive. By offering choices in our curriculum and a wide array of extra-curricular clubs, we encourage pupils to explore their unique interests. We teach our children that liberty is a right, but exercising it wisely is a skill. Through our restorative practice and school value ambassadors, we ensure every Marfleet child knows their voice has the power to create change.

Mutual Respect

At Marfleet Primary Academy, Mutual Respect is the heartbeat of our school. We recognise that every member of our community—child or adult—has a unique story and a valuable contribution to make. We teach our pupils to ‘disagree agreeably,’ ensuring that even when opinions differ, kindness remains. By modeling respectful relationships, we prepare our children to be compassionate citizens who uphold the dignity of others in our school, our city, and the wider world.

Tolerance and those of different faiths and beliefs

In a community like East Hull, teaching Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs is about opening windows to the wider world and celebrating everyone. Marfleet is a “safe harbor,” this value ensures that every child, regardless of their background or heritage, feels they truly belong.
