Computing

At Marfleet we want to ensure all learners, receive the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. It provides for our wonderful children broader development, enabling them to develop and discover their interests and talents. We want our children to leave us well rounded, respectable and ready for the world

Our curriculum is centred around our BEST principles:

Believing all children can, Engagement through excellence, Skills for life and Trailblazing thinkers

Computing at Marfleet Primary Academy

B – Believing all children can (Inclusion)

Purple Mash is designed as an inclusive “one-stop-shop” that removes barriers to technical learning.

  • Differentiated Tools: The platform provides “2Code” levels ranging from simple block coding to more complex script, ensuring every child—including those with SEND—can succeed at their own level.
  • Accessibility: Because it is cloud-based, children can access their “Online Work Folders” from home or school, reinforcing the belief that they can continue their learning journey anywhere.
  • Visual Scaffolding: Tools like “2Publish” provide templates that support children who may struggle with fine motor skills or literacy, allowing them to demonstrate their computing knowledge without being hindered by other challenges.
E – Engagement through excellence Purple Mash provides high-quality tools that mirror professional software, encouraging children to produce “excellent” digital work.

  • Creative Excellence: Students engage in sophisticated tasks, such as designing 3D games in “2DIY 3D” or creating digital art and animations that meet a high standard of presentation.
  • Gamified Learning: The use of interactive challenges and digital badges rewards perseverance and celebrates excellence in problem-solving.
  • Cross-Curricular Highs: Pupils apply their “excellent” computing skills to other subjects, such as creating a digital branching database about “Mountains” or an animation about “The Great Fire of London.”.
S – Skills for life The computing curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the essential “Skills for Life” required for safety and success in a modern world.

  • E-Safety: A core pillar of the programme is teaching children how to be “discerning” and safe online, which is perhaps the most critical digital life skill.
  • Digital Literacy: Pupils learn practical skills like emailing via “2Email,” touch-typing, and word processing, which are vital for secondary school and future employment.
  • Data Handling: Using “2Calculate” (spreadsheets) and “2Investigate” (databases) teaches pupils how to organise and interpret data, a key skill for many modern careers.
T – Trailblazing thinkers

Computing at Marfleet turns pupils into “Trailblazers” by teaching them to solve complex problems through logic and innovation.

  • Debugging and Persistence: When a piece of code doesn’t work, pupils must act as “thinkers” to identify the error (debugging). This builds resilience and logical reasoning.
  • Original Creation: Instead of just playing games, “Trailblazing thinkers” design them. They plan algorithms, create assets, and test their “products” for a real audience.
  • Collaborative Innovation: Tools like “2Connect” (mind mapping) allow pupils to brainstorm and map out complex ideas, fostering a culture of collaborative, forward-thinking thought.
