Phonics

At Marfleet Primary Academy, we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. We want every child to develop a lifelong love of reading, which is why we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised—a systematic and synthetic phonics programme (SSP).

Our Approach

We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through the school.

  • Daily Lessons
  • Reading Practice: Three times a week, children read in small groups with a trained member of the Marfleet team. These sessions focus on decoding, prosody (reading with expression), and comprehension.
  • Keep-Up Support: We closely monitor every child’s progress. If a child needs a little extra help, they receive “Keep-Up” sessions the same day to ensure no child is left behind.

Reading

At Marfleet Primary Academy, we aim to develop a love of language, reading and books. We believe that reading creates a firm foundation for children to be able to access learning, build confidence and independence. We are ambitious for our children and we intend for all our pupils to become fluent, confident readers who can independently read a range of books and texts.

We encourage all children to develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment for books and a lifelong love of reading through carefully chosen texts, regular author visits and trips to the local library.

We recognise that the skill of reading enables children to access and succeed in all other areas of the curriculum and intend to inspire all pupils with a wide range of texts and authors.

Our Approach – Reading for Pleasure

  • Reading forms an important part of every lesson
  • All pupils take home reading books daily and are expected to read at least 3 times per week at home
  • Class reads by the teacher take place in every class daily
  • All children have reading for pleasure time at 1pm daily
  • All pupils access the school library and take home a library book weekly
  • All classes visit the local library and have visits from authors

Our Approach – Reading Reconsidered

Reading lessons from Years 2 – 6 follow the Reading Reconsidered structure, using high quality texts recommended by Take One Book:

  • Do Now
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading Cycles
  • Independent Questions
  • Exit Ticket

Writing

At Marfleet Primary Academy, we intend for our children to leave as confident, independent and capable writers, who not only understand the purpose and importance of writing but also enjoy the writing process. We intend for children to use their writing skills across the curriculum.

We have planned a progressive programme which builds upon previous teaching and ensures that each child’s needs are met. We aim for our children to draw upon a rich exposure to quality literature so that, throughout the writing process, they can write as a reader and read as a writer. We intend to inspire and engage our children so that they are able to communicate and express themselves effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences.

We aim to enable our children to acquire a wide vocabulary, a solid understanding of grammar and be able to spell new words.

Our Approach

Carefully-sequenced  writing units for each year group have been developed to ensure coverage of a range of writing genres. These include:

  • A hook
  • A link to a carefully chosen high-quality text
  • Features of the genre
  • Expectations for the writing process – teacher modelling, drafting and editing
  • Grammar and punctuation to be taught

Handwriting is taught separately from a carefully planned scheme.

ALF’s (Always Looking For)

The Marfleet Foundational Knowledge Curriculum focuses on giving children the core knowledge, and understanding in reading, writing, maths, transcription and oracy. This enables children to have the knowledge they need so future learning becomes easier and more meaningful.

Our Approach

The Foundational Knowledge Curriculum at Marfleet is supported through the use of Always Looking For (AFL’s) and this ensures the children are regularly assessed in foundational knowledge.

  • Daily Lessons- Phonics, Basic skills, Handwriting (3x Per Week KS2)
  • Alf expectation as daily focus for all children
  • Keep-Up Support: We closely monitor every child’s progress. If a child needs a little extra help, they receive “Keep-Up” sessions to ensure no child is left behind.
