Personal Development

At Marfleet Primary Academy, we are driven by an inclusive ethos where we believe that barriers to learning are not limits, but challenges to be overcome together.

We are committed to an ambitious curriculum that equips every child with the academic achievements and interpersonal skills (character and resilience) they need to thrive. Our goal is to ensure that every Child is fully prepared to succeed in the next stage of their education and life beyond.

Our Staff Promise: Every Child, Every Opportunity.

Our Marfleet Learning Goals

In addition to our Core RSHE and PSE curriculum at Marfleet we recognise that success for our children is about more than just academic outcomes. To ensure our children thrive in secondary school and life beyond, we have developed our unique Marfleet Learning Goals (MLGs).

These goals are the heartbeat of our school following every child from Early Years through to Year 6. They are designed to build the ‘whole child’—equipping them with the social confidence, emotional resilience, and practical life skills they need to overcome barriers and seize future opportunities.

Emotional Regulation Training

Core goals of emotional regulation training:

  1. Identify emotions in themselves and others
  2. Label feelings using a shared, non-judgmental language
  3. Recognise body signals (heart rate, muscle tension, breathing)
  4. Choose strategies to move toward the Green Zone when needed
  5. Build self-regulation and empathy over time

Daily check-ins:

  • Morning emotional check-ins using the zones
  • Class zones displays
  • Calm corners or regulation stations
  • Teacher modeling (“I’m in the Yellow Zone, so I’m going to take a breath”)

The intent of implementing the Zones of Regulation in our primary school is to explicitly teach students the skills needed to recognise, understand, and manage their emotions and levels of alertness. Through consistent, developmentally appropriate instruction, children learn to identify their emotional states, notice body signals, and apply appropriate strategies to support self-regulation. The program is embedded into daily classroom practice and supported through adult modelling, coaching, and shared language across the school community. By fostering emotional awareness and regulation, the Zones of Regulation supports children’s’ wellbeing, positive behaviour, and readiness for learning, while promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
