Hello,

You will see below that we have plenty going on this term and hopefully you can see that we have acted following some feedback last year regarding some events being missed from the school calendar. We are also in the process of looking through the parent questionnaires and I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for taking the time to complete these, the feedback has been useful in shaping the future decisions of the school. If you haven’t had chance to complete a survey you still have time, but please get these to us by Monday.

Friends of Marfleet

Last week we met with some parents for our first ‘Friends of Marfleet’ group. Although only small in number at this stage, it was a positive start. We managed to set some dates in the diary for Halloween, Christmas and to fund raise. The next meeting is on Thursday 17th November at 3.15pm and anyone is welcome to get involved. The first event we have organised is a bun sale on Friday 21st October. Buns and cakes will be on sale on the school playground after school.

Halloween Disco

Back by popular demand is the Halloween disco on Monday 31st October. This will take place after school until 4.30pm. This should give you all enough time to go trick or treating afterwards including the staff with their children. Tickets are priced at £2.50, which will include entry, a hot dog, crisps/sweets and a drink. Mrs Steyert will send out details on Monday of how to buy a ticket.

Weekly Coffee Morning

Mrs Thomas’s weekly coffee morning is starting to attract more parents so please come along on a Thursday morning where you can have a natter or an offload! We also have our school mental health practitioner on hand to offer support and advice if needed.

Dogs on Site

Please can I ask that no dogs be brought onto the school site unless there are special circumstances such as guide dogs. This is to protect all our children and adults and is in line with Ebor policy, which will be shared on our website soon.

Attendance

I know it can feel like we are obsessed with attendance but we are simply committed to raising our whole school attendance figure, which is unfortunately below where it could be compared to other schools. Again, we have listened to feedback in making our approach as positive as possible. There are now prizes on offer for 100% attendance each week for individual children and for next week, we are offering 2 Rugby World Cup tickets to one lucky child and an adult (worth over £50). To qualify for the prize draw your child just needs 100% attendance the next 2 weeks. The winner will be drawn in the merit assembly on Friday 21st October. A big thank you to Mrs Welburn for donating this amazing prize!

Homework

Each class teacher will send home a spelling list to be practised each week for a short test. There is also an expectation that your child reads at least 3 times per week at home. In KS2, your child is also encouraged to access TT Rock stars at least 3 times per week. In EYFS there is no expectation for children to do homework, however we always welcome parents to add pictures and videos on Evidence Me of the amazing things you do at home. If you are struggling to access Evidence Me please speak to Miss Hemingway and she will be happy to help.

Bike to School Week

Thank you to all those who have taken part and to all parents who have had to juggle the school run with their child on their bike! Across the week over 80 children have come on their bike or scooter with many managing it every day. All children who have biked or scooted all week will be in with a chance of winning a special prize later today.

Bike Check

On the subject of bikes, we have an organisation in school on Wednesday 12th who will be conducting free cycle servicing and minor repairs to bikes brought on the day. If your child has a bike that you would like them to look at, please bring them to school in the morning and they will work on as many bikes as they can.

Harvest

From Monday we welcome any food donations for our Harvest celebrations. Any food we receive will be donated to a local food bank via St Giles Church. Our children will take part in a Harvest church service on the following dates; all parents are welcome at St Giles Church:

EYFS and KS1 – Wednesday October 19th at 1.30pm

KS2 – Thursday 20th October at 1.30pm.

EYFS Open Evening – for children starting school in September 2023

If you or anyone you know have a child starting school in September 2023, Miss Hemingway and the EYFS team are giving a talk in school at 3.30pm. Please come along or encourage others to do so.

Parents Evening

This term’s parents’ evenings will take place on Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th November. Mrs Steyert will be in touch next week with details of how to book an appointment with your child’s teacher.

Black History Week

The last week of this half term will be Black History Week in school linking in to the national Black History Month. Each class will look at a famous person and look in depth at their lives. Your child’s teacher will be in touch with more details.

Phonics Events

We are hosting a phonics and reading event for EYFS and KS1 parents on Thursday 24th November at 2.15pm in the school hall. Mrs Dunnachie and Miss Hemingway with be on hand to talk about how we teach phonics and give tips to help your child at home.

Year 6 Swimming

A reminder to all Year 6 parents that your child starts swimming lessons on Monday. Please make sure your child has their swimming kit, a towel and if they have long hair, their hair is tied back. Please also be on time as the bus leaves soon after registration.

Year 6 Residential

This year we are taking our Year 6s to High Adventure for a residential. If your child is in Year 6, you should have received a letter regarding this. If not please speak to Mr Dear.

I hope that your children are now settled into the routine of this school year and they are happy coming into school. As ever, if you have any issues please don’t be afraid to raise them and we will always be on hand to help.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Frankish
